There are many ways that a factory color can become rare. Some factory colors are limited production colors, while others are just unpopular choices. This week, I found two such colors for the SH Forester.
The Topaz Gold on this 2009 2.5X Premium was not a very popular choice, and only remained for the 2009 model year. I believe this is the first one I've seen in the wild in this color.
The Paprika Red Pearl on this 2010 Forester 2.5X Limited was a little too bold for the typical Forester buyer. It remained for 2 model years, but is rarely found out in the wild. This is the second one I've seen in the wild.
Other rare colors include Sky Blue Pearl (a light metallic blue), and Deep Cherry Pearl (a dark metallic maroon). Some colors might be more rare in certain regions, however, these colors seem to be pretty rare everywhere from what I've seen.
Let's see the rare colors of your car.

Our Mazda5 was a 2006, and you could only get Carbon Grey Metallic in 2006 so.... one year run color, and the first year of the 5 so they didn't build/sell many. W00T. Well, woot, if I would have kept it.

The Boston Green Metallic itself isn't too rare, but the Nappa Modena leather interior is super rare, especially in a sedan. Mine needs some work, but it's rare nonetheless.
However, everyone knows Technoviolet, the color I wish I owned.

I don't drive the Juke but I see one a lot in this color. Its a Chinese food delivery driver. Funky color on a funky car. The orange is a special edition STI (so not a WRX) but close enough.

The rarest colors for the first gen Mazda3 are Lava Orange and Solar Yellow Mica. They were both 2004-only colors, which was also the first year of the 3 in the U.S.
Mine is True Red Mica, last available for the 2008 model year.

For my SHO I'd say it's '13 M/Y only Forest Green color. If I ever got another SHO it'd be a Green '13.

Lime Glaze was pretty rare to find on Mark I Capri. Mostly because it was a hideous flourescent lime green. Suffice to say it never met the metal of a Mark II. I hope.

My car is the rarest color for 05-06, the only 2 years it was offered. Daytona Sunset Orange Metallic, somewhere ~10% of 05s (roughly 2000 cars) came in it. I think the number was smaller in 06.

Harlequin paint scheme om a Mk3 jetta. I think this was the only way to get that green color on the jetta. Each harlequin also had a "base" color - either red, blue, yellow, or green. THe car and everything got painted up in that base, and then various panels were removed and swapped around with other cars to make them "harlequin" colored.

I'm a fan of all amber signals (I painted my own signals amber), but I'm not sure if I like it on a Miata.....

It wasn't really a rare color, but if it were available on the Cooper instead of the Countryman, I totally would have gone with Surf Blue instead of Midnight Black.
Here's a Countryman in the aforementioned hue:
I always thought it looked a lot like Saab's Carolina Blue from the mid-70s in the right light. (me in my old '73)

My '73 Buick LeSabre is "Taupe Metallic". Some folks call it brown. I call it the Moose. (I hope to have it looking better than this soon, it only looks this good wet today...) When I paint it, I'm probably going to stick with this color just because, why not?

It was only recently I learned that Harlequin was an actual factory paint scheme! I saw a Golf for sale near where I work for a long time with this paint job and I thought "Why would somebody have done that and who would ever buy it?" until I learned that it was a factory thing. Now that I'm aware of it, I'm still not a big fan (not my thing) but at least respect that the guy didn't ruin his car trying to do something weird to it.
Curious - has anyone ever approached you with "Why would you do that to your car?"

Yes. But my jetta wasn't a harlequin. It did have a rusted trunk and beer labels on the front fenders. I also saw probably every harlequin golf/jetta in MI at the show this picture was taken at.
Full of the sound of the Gran Fury, signifying nothing.

If you wanted a non-automatic cog-swopper on a 2012 Mazda5 (1st year for new body style in the US) you had a choice of three colors. For 2013 they changed the red, so I guess mine is on the rare side.

A friend of mine has a Dark Blue '09 Forester XT. It's the only dark blue (not completely black, but not blue either) one I've seen.

The B6 Passat was apparently available in Tornado Red, but possibly only on special-order. Never seen one, anywhere, ever.

Barbados Blue Metallic. If I remember right, they made 573 of them, 271 with manuals.

Not mine (sadly)
I see this guy driving on a daily basis in this beast. He's a younger guy. I'm honestly thinking it may be the only Samoa Orange RS7 in the
world.
As for me, I drive quite possibly the most popular Volvo R color - Electric Silver Metallic over Nordkap (blue) leather.
Volvo still uses Electric Silver today and I think it's one of the nicest silver's available. It has a blue tint to it.

There's a B6 sedan a few blocks from here in Tornado Red. Only one I've ever seen and it's damned handsome. I just Google Streetviewed the house - of course it's not there....grrr.

Double Yellow on my '02 Turbo Beetle. 2,000 made...part of the 'color concept' package with the wheel inserts, yellow leather sport seats and leather door cards, yellow steering wheel and shift gaiter stitching, yellow trim on the floor mats. LOTS of yellow.

Thanks. They also did the 'color concept' package with the metallic cyber green (made for weird looking seats) and that burnt orange color they had...also made for a handsome car. I wonder if mine's a real oddball in that it has this package with a manual transmission...

Dark Bowling Green metallic on my 2001 Corvette roadster. This was the last time green was available until this year's Lime Rock Green
